Adventure Mom: Hiking While Pregnant
Just because you have a bun in the oven doesn’t mean you have to relinquish your adventurous spirit! For the most part, medical professionals suggest that you keep your life as normal as possible during pregnancy. Obviously, caring for yourself and your unborn child is top priority, so staying safe is important. But if you are an avid hiker, adventurer, or all-around outdoors woman, keeping to your routine is okay and even recommended! If you are an outdoor newbie, however, here are some things to take into account before you hit the trails!
Always Tell Someone Where You Are Going
It doesn’t matter if you are on a paved nature trail or deep in the back country, ALWAYS tell someone where you will be going. Even if you have been there a thousand times! Injuries happen all the time, and this time, your unborn child’s safety needs to be taken into consideration as well. Also, if you were to experience any pregnancy-related complications while exploring God’s great earth, they would know what area to search for you in case medical assistance is needed. It is always a good idea to carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or Satellite Messenger Device while hiking, in case cell phone service is unavailable. These devices can alert emergency responders and send short text messages to family and friends.
Stay Within Your Comfort Zone
While exercise is encouraged during pregnancy, medical professionals do not encourage pregnant women to increase the intensity of their exercise to a level they would not have done prior to pregnancy. This concept should be adhered to with adventuring as well. Never go leaps and bounds out of your comfort zone or level of ability. Doing this could put you and your baby at risk.
Wear Comfortable Footwear
A pregnant woman’s center of gravity is thrown off by excess weight and a growing belly. Because of that, good, supportive shoes are essential to help you navigate the rougher terrain of the trail. Shoes should have high traction, and excellent ankle and arch support. Try wearing them for a walk around your neighborhood before taking them out on the trail. Pay attention to spots that rub (blisters are no good!) and to the level of comfort during your walk.
Bring Extra Food & Water
Snacks high in protein, carbs and some salt are great for outdoor adventures! Be sure to pack more than what you think you will need. Water is also essential. Please consult your doctor to decide what amount of activity is best for you! Staying active and living a life in motion is a great way to stay fit during pregnancy, but as always, consult your doctor first!
