Two to Kiss, Two to Love: Funny Twin Questions

Two to Kiss, Two to Love: Funny Twin Questions

Like I said in my last article, when you have twins, you are now part of a secret club--the “I have twins so ask me all about them” club. It’s like you’re walking around with a huge sign that says, “Yes, they are twins! Come ask me about them,” whether you want the attention or not.

Many times, I’ve been stopped and asked the funniest questions about my twins—questions I try to answer seriously, but have to laugh at how ridiculous some of them are. I polled a group of twin mamas, and asked them to share their stories. These questions and answers are cracking me up, and I can’t wait to share them all with you.

Most often, conversations about your twins will start with, “Are they twins?” Most of the time, twin mamas just answer “yes” and move on. But sometimes, you’ve heard this question a million times, and you just have to answer with something silly. Rachel S. stole her response from a video of a twin dad poking fun at funny twin questions. She responds to them saying, “No, there are three of them but I left one home alone.” Afterwards, she laughs, and says, “I’m kidding. Yes, they are twins.”

Allysen I. said “I have boy/girl twins who look completely different. They were about 18 months old and we were shopping. I had a lady stop me and tell me they were cute, but then said, 'It could be worse, they could be twins.' I smiled and said, 'Oh, it’s worse. They are twins!' She was shocked and asked me if I was sure.”

I’m pretty sure a twin mama would never forget carrying two humans in her body for nine whole months.

Another common question asked to twin mamas is if they are identical or fraternal. But, this question obviously shouldn’t apply to boy/girl twins. You know why, right? If you don’t know, I’m going to need you to read that a few more times until you understand why a boy and a girl could NOT be identical. ;) I don’t think people think before they ask the question, since it’s a very standard twin question. You see twins, and you automatically wonder if they are identical. After being asked this question by multiple people, Katie O. finally responded, “Yes, I have the first set of identical boy/girl twins.”

Usually, people continue on to ask if a twin mama was surprised when she had twins, or if she actually enjoys having twins. I LOVE having twins. I’ve wanted them my entire life, so I was the most ecstatic person when I found out I was pregnant with them. I answer this question with a resounding “I LOVE MY TWINS!!” However, this question can get old very quickly. Would you ever hear someone say this about a singleton child? “Did you want that child?” No, no. But, it’s a pretty standard twin question.

A woman asked Rachel S., “Do you wish you didn’t have twins and only had one of them?” Rachel laughed and said, “Yeah, I only like one of them but what do you do?” The lady was in shock. Rachel continued, “Of course not! I adore them both!!! What kind of question is that?” Realizing what she had actually asked, she responded, “I am glad you are happy.”

Or the alternate version of this question is “Who’s your favorite?” A Utah twin mama responds with “Whichever one is sleeping better!”

When people see me out with my twins, they are always impressed, and tell me I have my hands full, or that I’m a saint, or that I must be pretty incredible to handle such a task. And apparently, I’m not the only one. Lindsay N. responds to this question by saying “They wouldn’t let me return one, so I just had to figure it out!”

Before joining the twin club, Mindy P. and her husband used to be those people who saw a mama with her twins, and would say, “Yeah…let’s NOT do that…let’s just take one kid at a time and see how many we end up with.” Now that she has twins, her husband tells her she lied to him.

At the end of the day, these questions (and the hilarious ways we choose to answer them) make us twin mamas smile. Twins are amazing. I don’t mind telling everybody and anybody how fantastic they are and how much I love them. And unless you’re extremely introverted, what twin mama doesn’t like to brag about her adorable children? And so easily might I add! Like I said, you do have a sign on you now, and until your twins grow up, you’ll get automatic bragging rights to EVERYBODY.

Britney L. states it so nicely. “I LOVE getting stopped to brag. I put a ton of hard work into those girls. Getting to hear others say what a delight they are has helped me get through my hard days! I love spouting out their names, ages, and more. They are my pride and joy.”

Ain’t that the truth?
