We see it all the time. Parents come in after hours of research and know exactly what car seat and stroller they want...and then completely blank when it's time to choose a diaper bag.
Determining what diaper bag will be absolutely ideal is extremely overwhelming for parents-to-be! Honestly, though, how can you not get decision fatigue when thinking about all the things a new baby needs?!
Here are a few considerations to give you a jumping off point when it comes time to pick out your perfect bag.
Lifestyle
It is helpful to consider what your lifestyle is like before purchasing any gear, and that goes for diaper bags, too.
One thing is for sure -- the diaper bag is definitely not for just the baby! It will quickly become your purse, your catchall, and something you carry with you everywhere, so it's important that you love it and that it also fits your needs. Make sure it has a spot for your wallet, sunglasses, and whatever else you generally carry with you.
Another important consideration is whether or not you may have more than one child in the future. I know, I know, let's focus on one thing at a time! But this is something to think about if you're going to invest in a durable, well-made bag. At some point you may be packing for both a newborn and a toddler, so keep that in mind as you examine just how much growing room a bag has to get you through all stages of motherhood.
Design
Of course practicality is important, but so is style! Choose a bag you truly would not mind becoming a third appendage, because as I said above, you really will take it everywhere.
When it comes to aesthetics, one of my personal favorites is the Freshly Picked Minimal Backpack. Even with two kiddos, I tend to pack on the light side for day-to day errands, so it suits my lifestyle. Don't be fooled by it's slick exterior though! On the inside, it features seven pockets, which is plenty for organizing both your stuff and baby's! I also love bags with metal feet on the bottom to keep it elevated off of sticky or dirty floors.
Carry Options
Do you prefer to be totally hands-free with a backpack or is a tote style with shoulder straps more functional for you? Maybe you prefer a messenger style bag that allows you to wear it multiple ways -- behind you, to the side, or to easily twist around to the front.
If you ask me, they all serve a purpose and each may be useful to you at some point. Backpacks are ideal if you're trying to wrangle up multiple kids. It stays put on your back and won't get entangled in your arms and legs as you're trying to buckle a wiggly toddler into her car seat. I've been there.
Tote bags make great overnight or weekender bags. They generally have a larger packing capacity, meaning you can fit everything you need for a weekend, as opposed to just a quick run to the grocery store. I personally find myself reaching for my Wherever Weekender Bag for overnight trips to Grandma's, and opting for a backpack like the Fawn Design Original Diaper Bag for day-to-day events.
