Idea Box - Senses

No doubt about it…kids love to live in the moment & experience everything!

Kids feel every wisp of air. They can hear a branch rub against the side of the house on a rainy day. Sometimes, they taste certain foods a little too well. They can spot a run-away balloon way up in the sky or smell a piece of chocolate a mile away (or so it seems).

Sometimes using our senses can be lifesaving. Mostly, we use them to experience or figure out how we feel about something in our environment.

The Senses Box is filled with simple, child-led activities that focus on using our 5 “main” senses; although we know there are several more that we rely upon. Your child will no doubt be using them all as they do each activity.

It will be fun to watch as your child begins to recognize and put a name to what senses they are using.

Here are just a few of the activities you will find in the box:

• Read Lips
• Tape record your voice & listen
• Feel vibrations. Put fingers over throat. Hum, whisper, talk.
• Close your eyes & listen while another person completes a task. What do you think they are doing?
• Taste test foods that look the same: salt & sugar, etc.
• Make a texture collage
• Open the fridge. What things can you smell?

The best part is that the activities never get old. Kids can do them over and over again and have a different experience every time!
