Five Holiday Traditions to Start with Your Family

Five Holiday Traditions to Start with Your Family

The things that I love about Christmas don’t just happen on December 25th.  For me and my family, it's also about the things leading up to that day. Each year we are so excited to do a few of the things we love. We have also found so much joy in welcoming something new each year. I wanted to provide a list of things that we have enjoyed and hope that your family can too.

Bake

Whether it's cookies or candies, the holiday season is not complete without your favorite sweets. My kids love baking and cooking with me in the kitchen. Baking up a batch of your favorite Christmas cookies also is the perfect gift to give your neighbors and friends.

A December 1st Box

This is a new tradition for us but one that I plan to continue, as it has been so fun for us-- we give our kids Christmas pajamas and an advent calendar on the 1st! This makes it so they can wear their cute festive jammies all month long. Also, it would be cute if you didn't want to give jammies to give a soft blanket to snuggle under.

Movie Marathon

I think we all love watching our favorite festive movies! As a family we try to plan them out a little bit. Let our kids each have a weekend night to pick which one they want to share with the family! There is so much nostalgia in my kids enjoying movies like The Santa Clause that I loved when I was younger.

Christmas Lights

Depending on where you live, the way you enjoy the Christmas lights that people display may change! But nevertheless enjoy them! We have been able to find drive-thru Christmas light displays, and it's been so fun. Talk to neighbors and friends and find out where the best neighborhoods are! My kids' eyes light up with Christmas lights and it is so magical.

Find Ways You Can Give

I think its important all the time to teach our kids the concept of service, especially this time of year. I think sometimes we can get caught up in the wanting of Christmas time and forget about those who may be less fortunate than we are. Having your kids help pick toys to donate can be special for them to do. There is also a giving machine where you have the opportunity to give things that others really need around the world. 10 U.S. locations can be found here.

I hope that you and your families can find that warm and fuzzy feeling that this time of year can have. When I start feeling overwhelmed by all the things I think I should be doing to make the holidays exciting, I remind myself that it's really about the quality time we spend together and everything else is just a bonus.
