Best Tips to Stay Cool This Summer During Pregnancy
I think it is safe to say that for the majority of us, pregnancy can be hard and uncomfortable at some point. Add in the heat of the summer and BAM-- pregnancy glow changes to just sweat and misery. While you are pregnant, your temperature is already a bit higher from increased blood flow and extra fluid your body has. I recently saw a study that talked about how getting your core heat too high is risky for you and for baby. I wanted to help other mamas out who may need a few ideas or reminders on ways to stay cooler during the hot months.
I think this goes without saying, but even when I know the importance of proper hydration, there are days I fail to do it. According to the ACOG, pregnant woman should drink at least 8 to 12 cups (64 to 96 oz) of water every day! You'll need more if you are engaging in any strenuous activity. When you are sweating you are losing electrolytes, and electrolytes play a big role in staying hydrated.
A few of my favorite foods that help in replenishing electrolytes are bananas, watermelon, avocado, and coconut water. When just water gets boring, I love to cut up some fresh fruit or citrus to make it a little more fun. I also love to use a cute water bottler or tumbler.
Eat "Cool Foods"
Have a break, put your feet up, and enjoy a cold or frozen snack! Homemade or store bought popsicles are a great choice! My kids love to make a mixture of Greek yogurt and different fruits to put in popsicle molds. Cold fruit is always an easy and quick option, and if you haven't tried it, frozen grapes are such a yummy and healthy treat. Avoiding warm foods can help, since the body starts to produce heat when sipping hot drinks, soups, or meals.
Care About What You Wear
Choosing loose and breathable options for clothing can make such a difference. I love flowy dresses, and linen fabrics because the fabric is soft on my skin and keeps me feeling comfortable. For lounging around my home, I love a good house dress.
Get in the Water
Whether for a bit of exercise or a leisurely lie on the floating chairs, we can all agree that there is something special about a cool pool or safe lake during those scorching days. Being able to be in a cool pool allows you to get fresh air when the day is to hot to just sit outside.
