When it comes to infant car seats, the Chicco Keyfit 30 has been a leader in parent satisfaction, and has sat at the top of consumer reports' Best Car Seats list. Why you ask? Because Chicco designed a seat that is lightweight, and easy for parents to install, while still being comfortable and safe for your babe!
Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat - Papyrus
The Keyfit 30 is designed for infants from 4-30 lbs
and up to 30 inches tall
. Most little ones will probably outgrow the height requirement before the weight limit, so if your babe's head is about an inch below the top of the car seat, then it's time to upgrade the seat. But Chicco
made the Keyfit perfect for kids from day 1 with their padded infant insert
, and comfortable 5-point harness
. It's also reinforced with EPS foam for added impact protection.
There are a couple of things that we love about the Keyfit 30 that make this seat a parent favorite and a leader in safety ratings. First would have to be the ease of install. Every parent who has ever tried to install a car seat for the first time knows it is not always easy. But Chicco made sure that parents weren't going to be sitting there fumbling around hoping their base is installed correctly. The base has lap belt guides and easy-to-use indicators that make the base a breeze to install, and has a smooth underside to help keep your car's seats from getting damage. The base also features a one-handed latch tether for tightening the base (hallelujah). This means you won't need your husband to spend 30 minutes pulling on three different latch straps to make sure it's installed tightly and correctly. Huge plus!
Another great feature is that every part of the Keyfit that moves, or helps a part of the car seat function, is orange. So any button, lever, or latch is easy to see, so you're not guessing about where to find the button that releases the seat, or loosens the straps. If it's orange, you can push it! This car seat also has a wide handlebar which is great for parents whose babes are still little enough to be carried in and out and all over in the car seat. The wider handle helps distribute the weight a little more evenly, making it easier to carry. And thanks to its lightweight design, you won't be carrying around any more weight than you want to with a chunky little babe in there!
There are also a couple of things about the Chicco Keyfit 30 that we don't love, and may make a difference to some of our mamas out there. Because this car seat is designed to be comfortable for our babes, the padded seat and the material aren't the most breathable of fabrics and may not be a great choice if you have any worries about your babe overheating. For our mamas who live in warm states, or are planning on having a little one arrive during the summer, you may want to consider a seat with a more breathable fabric to help keep babe cool. Another drawback is the canopy--it's a little bit clunky when used at the same time as the handlebar, and is also rigid so it can sometimes be a pain to work with when you're trying to push it back and out of the way.
