Comotomo: Breastfeeding in a Bottle

Most mamas-to-be set out to try and breastfeed their newborns. Stories of bleeding, blistered, and scabbed nipples somehow don’t deter us when we hear all the benefits of breastmilk. When it comes down to it though, I don’t really want my nipples to be bleeding, blistered, and scabbed; I want my husband and anyone who is helping with my baby to help feed in the middle of the night or while I’m at work. And sometimes breastfeeding just isn’t that convenient, and I want to whip out a bottle instead of my boob in the car or at my dad's house.

Okay, so I want to breastfeed AND bottle feed, but what about nipple confusion? Nipple confusion is the tendency of an infant to unsuccessfully adapt between breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Some signs of this are when a baby fails to open their mouth wide enough to latch or when they become frustrated when it takes a minute of sucking for the breast milk to let down. Or what about bottle rejection? Bottle rejection is exactly what it sounds like: your babe struggles or refuses to take a bottle by turning away from the bottle, gagging or fussing as the bottle's nipple nears their mouth, or being unable to latch/compress the bottle's nipple and express milk.

Feeding baby can get a little overwhelming when you hear of all the things that could go wrong. This is when the Comotomo bottles become your favorite thing. When Comotomo set out to design their bottles, they wanted to resolve all existing problems with standard baby bottles. And boy did they! You’ve probably seen them before. They’re green (and pink, but usually green) and the body of the bottle is squishy. The first time I saw them I wasn’t even a mom yet, but I asked if I could hold one because they looked so cool! I was sold long before I would ever need them.

The Comotomo Baby Bottle features a naturally shaped, soft silicone nipple that is ideal for babies who have trouble transitioning from nursing to bottle feeding. Their innovative design was made to most closely mimic breastfeeding so your baby doesn’t begin to think bottles are easier or reject the bottle before they even try it.

Comotomo explains that “it’s rescued so many families dealing with ‘nipple confusion’ and ‘bottle rejection’ that our Comotomo mamas coined the term ‘Breastfeeding in a Bottle!’”

Not only do the bottles help with nipple confusion and bottle rejection, but they also help with colic. Although colic could be caused by a wide range of things, many people blame it on getting too much air in the baby’s tummy while they bottle feed. Comotomo bottles have two anti-colic vents that are smartly placed on the nipple to ensure that your baby's bottle is perfectly ventilated. This means that your little one drinks milk and not air. Good airflow helps to prevent unwanted colic, spit up, burping, and gas.

I’m not exaggerating how wonderful this bottle is. When researching nipple confusion, bottle rejection, and colic, some of the top links, referrals, and reviews were for the Comotomo Bottle. So if you are on the hunt for a bottle to help resolve issues or are prepping for baby to get here you will not be disappointed in Comotomo.
