How to Slow Down and Enjoy the Holidays

How to Slow Down and Enjoy the Holidays

Hello, December! As I look at all the dates that are already filled with “to-do’s” for the month, I feel instantly overwhelmed. I learned a couple years ago that I find so much more joy this time of year if I don’t overschedule my days, BUT somehow that is easier said than done. Here are a few tips I have found that helped me to get the most out of the holiday season.

1. Choose what is most important.

I make a list of what is important to me this holiday, and which activities I truly want to participate in. I've realized that I can’t have a meaningful holiday if I don’t choose things that mean something to me. I ask myself, "Why do I want to do this?" and I leave out the things that make me feel overwhelmed. Doing this has helped me feel more present for the things that I do choose to do.

    2. Manage your holiday parties.

THIS was the biggest game changer for me. Besides the regular hussle that December brings, two of my kids have birthdays and so do I. This means if I had to do it all I could be going or hosting 6-8 parties in December. It is too much for me. I prioritize which ones are most important to me, and I am flexible with the rest.

      3. Pace yourself and take care of yourself.

December is long, even if the days feel short. You can’t do it all alone. (And if you can, you don't have to.) Ask for help and delegate things out as much as possible. Staying consistent with the things that keep me healthy, like making good food choices and exercising daily, is especially important--this helps me feel energetic and healthy all month long.

        4. Find a fun new tradition.

Holiday traditions don't have to be expensive, time consuming, or complicated. Find something simple that your family will enjoy. Having trouble making a new fun tradition? Here are a few you can add to your list this year!

        • Go ice skating or sledding
        • Bake holiday cookies and deliver some to a friend
        • Drive around and see Christmas lights
        • Try a festive Starbucks drink or a Chick-Fil-A peppermint shake
        • Make a list of Christmas movies to watch
        • Buy festive pajamas

Just like so much in our life, I believe we can make it what we want it to be! The holiday season should be enjoyable and unforgettable! So take some time to slow down, sort out what matters most, and enjoy the simple moments with the ones you love!
